The story

Life in SLO County

San Luis Obispo sits roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Its downtown grew up around the mission and Mission Plaza along San Luis Obispo Creek.

The city is home to Cal Poly and is ringed by the Nine Sisters, a chain of volcanic peaks that includes Bishop Peak. The Edna Valley wine region lies just to the south.

The history

Where it began

Father Junípero Serra founded Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa in 1772, the fifth of California’s 21 missions.

San Luis Obispo was incorporated in 1856. The railroad’s arrival in 1894 connected the town to the rest of the state.

California Polytechnic School, today Cal Poly, was founded in 1901. The Madonna Inn opened in 1958 and remains a local landmark.
